Doda, Sep 13 (KNO): Markets in Doda District and other major towns reopened for six hours on Saturday after authorities announced a relaxation in restrictions for 6 hours. The curbs were imposed earlier this week following the detention of MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Deputy Commissioner Doda, Harvinder Singh, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said the district administration is easing restrictions in phases to ensure that law and order is maintained.
Talking to reporters, Singh said gatherings of more than five to six people remain prohibited. Residents have been asked to step out only for essential needs.
Singh said that officials from district administration visited market areas and held meetings with civil society representatives, transport unions, and market associations to address supply and transport issues. “Many supply disruptions were linked to closures on the National Highway in Udhampur,” he said, adding, “Efforts are on to restore supply lines and ensure vehicles can move under monitoring. Markets in Thatri and Bhadarwah subdivisions are already functioning, and restrictions in other areas will be reviewed before being lifted.”
On schools, the DC said inspections are underway following heavy rains to assess damages. Safety certificates are required for schools to reopen, and the process is expected to be completed by Monday so that the students can resume classes.
Singh also warned against misinformation circulating in the district. “Doda continues to remain calm and residents are cooperating with authorities,” he added.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mehta confirmed that restrictions on interior markets would be relaxed, while the ban on gatherings would continue in other areas. He said no untoward incidents have been reported since Friday.
Curfew and mobile internet suspension were imposed earlier this week after protests erupted following Malik’s detention under PSA and transfer to Kathua Jail.
Authorities said they will continue reviewing internet connectivity in the district and open services in phases depending on the situation—(KNO)
